Advent: Day 17
”And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”“
Luke 1:46-55 NIV
This passage of scripture is a song Mary sang shortly after she discovered she was pregnant and was going to give birth to the Saviour of the world. I love the humility that she shows.
She is honoured and sees it as a blessing that God would use her as a part of his plan of salvation. She knows what he can do, and even if she doesn’t know the full plan, she is rejoicing that God would choose her, even if it may be difficult for her.
People with this sort of humility shine joy and point things back to God. True humility doesn’t ignore what is going on in our own life, but it aims to focus on something bigger. This is not easy, but it comes from learning to focus on Jesus.
As we continue to focus on him this Advent season, may he be our main goal, and may we take whatever role he is calling us to, with joy.
